Backyard Grilling Safety Tips
Grills cause thousands of home fires every year, most of them in the warmer months. A few habits make backyard cooking much safer.
Pick the right spot
Use grills outdoors only, well away from the house, deck railings and overhanging branches. Never grill in a garage, carport or under a covered porch.
Keep it clean
- Remove grease and fat buildup from grates and trays.
- Check gas hoses for leaks with soapy water before the first cookout of the season.
- Use only charcoal starter fluid on charcoal grills, and never add it to a lit fire.
Stay with the grill
Never leave a lit grill unattended, and keep children and pets at least three feet away.
Be ready for flare-ups
Keep a lid nearby to smother flare-ups, and have a fire extinguisher within reach. Never use water on a grease fire.
Cool down safely
Let coals cool completely, then put them in a metal container with a lid, away from the house.
