Shopping Safely on Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but you cannot always tell who runs a network or who else is connected. A few simple steps keep your personal information safer.
Check the network name
Ask staff for the exact Wi-Fi name. Fake networks sometimes use names that look almost the same as the real one.
Look for a secure connection
- Only enter passwords and payment details on sites that start with https.
- Use the store’s official app or type the web address yourself.
- Avoid saving payment cards on shared or public computers.
Use your phone’s data for checkout
If you can, switch to your mobile data or a personal hotspot when you sign in or pay. A reputable VPN adds another layer of protection.
Turn on two-step verification
Two-step verification means a stolen password alone is not enough to get into your accounts.
Sign out and check statements
Sign out of accounts when you are done, and review your card statements regularly for charges you do not recognize.
