Settling Into a New Home After a Move
Moving day is only the start. The first week in a new home is easier when you tackle the essentials first and leave the rest for later.
Pack an open-first box
Before the move, pack one box with sheets, towels, a few dishes, phone chargers, basic tools, toilet paper, soap and medicines. Label it clearly and keep it with you.
Check safety on day one
- Test every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, and replace batteries or units as needed.
- Find the electrical panel and the main water shut-off.
- Make sure every bedroom has a clear way out.
- Put a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit where you can reach them.
Unpack room by room
Start with the kitchen and bedrooms so you can eat and sleep well, then move to bathrooms and living areas. Break down boxes as you go.
Update your address
Change your address with the post office, your bank, your employer and the online stores you use, so new orders arrive at the right door.
Meet the neighborhood
Find the nearest pharmacy, grocery store, urgent care and parks, and save their numbers and hours in your phone.
